This approach of using a flexible membrane and conductive pads is a super inexpensive method of making thousands-and-thousands (millions even?) of products that work well and are easily mass produced. When a fret is pressed down, the membrane deforms, allowing the pads on the membrane to contact the mating pads on the printed circuit board, and the electronics are able to register the keypress.

This all sits on top of a small printed circuit board that has matching conductive traces that align with the conductive pads on the silicon membrane. The membrane contains two conductive electrical pads.

On a standard Guitar Hero type guitar, the fret buttons (red, green, yellow, blue, orange) sit above a silicon membrane. "Well, that's the world record," says GHAddict at the end. The dexterity required to play at this speed is astonishing, and showcases that tapping the buttons with your right hand - like a metal guitarist might do on a real guitar - is necessary in order to hit all of the notes. (Skip to 4:20 - seriously - to see GHAddict exclaim "fuck yes" after realizing he's seconds away from beating the record) GHAddict played the song on Expert difficulty and set the already astounding speed to a multiplier of 165 percent. Guitar Hero 3 may have been released 13 years ago, but world records are still being smashed today.
